Springtime baby animals

by Celestetia, 9 year old student writer

I like spring animals because they all come out after the cold winter, and they will have adorable babies, especially eastern gray squirrels and robins.

Eastern Gray Squirrel

Eastern gray squirrels are a type of tree squirrel and their babies are cute. Eastern gray squirrels start mating in January and finish in February, and sometimes they may keep going until July. When the female squirrels are going to start mating, they make sounds and scents. The males start to fight to show who is the best then the female will run away. The males cause the female to get tagged and they mate. The female squirrels are pregnant for about 44 days. Eastern gray squirrels are tree squirrels, and they live in the hole of a tree. They prepare nuts to get ready for their babies. And they usually have three to four squirrel babies per season. Eastern gray squirrels nest in the tree and their babies are lovable.

Robin Spring animal breeding

Robin is the first sign of spring and their babies are cute. Robins start mating in January, but the breeding season will not start till March. Robins build nests to prepare for their babies. Their nests usually build in a place that is concealed with tons of plants around. The female robin builds a nest alone while the male robin brings food for home. Once the blue eggs are laid, the female incubates them alone for 13 days. Once the chicks are hatched, both parents will take care of them. The female may eat the shells of the eggs for extra calcium. In two weeks the chicks are now a young chick. And then they will get ready to fly.  Robin’s babies are adorable and they show us spring is here.

My experience with spring animals

We saw robins and eastern gray squirrels in our yard all the time, especially during spring time. When we first moved here, there was a robin’s nest right behind our house and we watched the whole progress through the windows. We loved watching them all the time. We also love watching eastern gray squirrels running around and eating outside. We love their babies because they are very cute.
