Finding Balance

Medussa's Myths Medallion Rebecca Godina, storyteller and writer, comes to Mind Key from the great state of Washington.  Rebecca will share her unique take on life and allow us to join her on her fantastic journey through the many fictions (some factual!) of life. Many of us have this elusive goal of “finding balance” in our lives, but do we really know what that means? My job once held a seminar on balancing work and home life, but honestly it felt more like a juggling lesson than a lesson in balance. At least in Western culture, we are expected to busy ourselves with many different things, to the point that we think balance means being able to keep up with them all. I don’t think that’s true....

Happy New Year…..I’m Tapped Out On Self Improvement.

I love to read blogs. Blogs of all kinds.  "Stress Almost Killed Me-Then I Changed My Mind", "Do You Focus On Your Needs Or The Needs Of Others", "How To Be A More Mindful Parent". The list can go on and on. We read blogs to get information, see a different side to something, learn a new craft..whatever.What I have found, as I write this blog, is that it's another three second sound bite. My life for the last 10 years has been, mind you slowly, getting more distracted. As I, write this, I'm texting with a TV on in the background. I have read numerous blogs on how to be more "zen". Do one thing at a time. Take your time. (I'm now watching...

Online Dream Interpretation

I don’t have a Shaman or a psychic on hand every time I have a dream.  In fact, I just plain don’t have either of those folks in my life.  I do, however, have dreams.  As we all do.  We may not remember them when we wake up, but we all dream.Since I don’t have a live dream interpreter handy, if a dream is weird, troubling or interesting to me, I turn to www.dreammoods.com.  There are a multitude of websites that claim to be the “correct” interpretation of your dreams, all backed by someone or other who says they know.  I chose dreammoods because #1, it was the first website of its kind that I had seen, #2, It has a dream “dictionary” where images...

Celtic Art Contest

Things are always moving forward here at Mind Key.  We are please to announce the next official contest, always in an effort to look for talented individuals to enrich our community and inspire the world.  When I brainstormed for ideas on what the contest theme should be, it came to me pretty easily.  Being drawn to anything Celtic I realized that during my research I’ve come across so many people, websites, and entire communities just as enamored with the Celtic culture as I am.  For this reason, Mind Key is seeking talented artists of any genre to submit their best representation of any Celtic art.For information about this contest and to access our form submission click here.  Most importantly, don’t forget to share our contest...

What is Raven Reiki?

One of the core values of Reiki is the notion that the healing does not come from the healer but moves through the healer from a universal energy source. In other words I am a conduit, a hollow bone.  In Reiki there is no ego. I have known healers who become impressed with themselves, thinking they are healing their clients. Shortly their energy becomes depleted. The universe doesn't condone that notion and reacts accordingly. The other tougher concept is the necessity to forgive all those who have acted unkindly to you and ask for only the best for them. Hard to get up in the morning and ask for blessings even on those who have wronged...

What is Reiki?

I don’t purport to speak for every Reiki healer, but learning Reiki changed my life.  The International Center for Reiki Training says that “Reiki energy comes from the Higher Power, which exists on a higher dimension than the physical world we are familiar with. When viewed clairvoyantly, Reiki energy appears to come down from above and to enter the top of the practitioners head after which if flows through the body and out the hands. It appears to flow this way because of our perspective. However, the true source of Reiki energy is within ourselves. This does not mean that we use our personal energy when we do Reiki, but that the energy is coming...

Why I am a part of Mind Key?

I’m part of several clubs or groups, each with interests that are pretty narrow – ghost hunters, equestrians, genealogists, therapeutic riding instructors.  Mind Key isn’t like that, Mind Key is unique.  Just look at the members, could you find a more diverse group?  Writers, bloggers, artists, nutritionists, poets, healers, jewelry makers, cupcake bakers, collage makers.  Here is a group whose most unifying aspect is their uniqueness.  Am I making myself clear, ‘cause I feel I just ran in a circle?  I innately know that we all have a singular goal, to better ourselves and the world, but we are moving there on different paths.  There’s camaraderie when we meet, comfortableness when we exchange ideas. ...

How Mind Key began

I began Mind Key the Novel as a writer exploring the illuminated spaces in my mind.  It began after a focusing session where I gave substance and vision to the persistent lump in my throat….That's when things began to change.  I always knew I had the ability to manifest my reality through my art, but this novel allowed me to do more than just create, it allowed me to see the world around me more clearly.  My guides and the faeries in my life began revealing themselves through the words on the page. They encouraged me to take chances, be daring and follow my dreams. And so I did.Arwork my Michelle FarenciWhat I never expected was the overwhelming response this endeavor would cultivate.  People began rallying...

Excerpt from “Blood Ties, Book One of From Broken Wings Series”

Excerpt from From Broken Wings a novel by Tamara Rokicki. No one could figure out what had happened to Kyna—the young girl—but from the wounds on her neck they decided it was the attack of a rabid wolf that had entered the cottage through an open window.  Many believed this theory, although some found the incident odd and unsettling. If only they knew, Antha thought. Kyna’s father had blamed himself for forgetting the window open, his sunken face unable to speak or eat since the death of his daughter.  A knot formed in Antha’s throat and more than anything she wanted let him know he wasn’t to blame.  But she couldn’t. If she revealed the truth, her sister Áine would be burned at the stake.  ...

I love to cook!

I'll say it again, I love to cook.  I love to eat, too, so that works out well.  I love trying new foods, I even love grocery shopping.  I love to explore the grocery store (found bottles of clam juice today.) A few years ago, I subscribed to E-Meals. I got this awesome Groupon that gave me twelve months of meal plans and grocery lists for like $30 or some equally shocking amount.  I was all gung ho to use them.  They came by email each Thursday.  Sweet!  New food possibilities!  Then I realized that I live with a bunch of guys who choose to have limited flavor pallets. Sad. I looked at the awesome recipes and my running diatribe sounded something like this...

My Love For Italian Cooking

Being born and raised in Italy has been a huge part of my life.  My upbringing is deeply rooted in the Italian culture and its traditions.  Of course, a huge part of my diverse cultural upbringing is Italian food.  In my family, and as in most Italian families, cooking isn’t just a way to enjoy good, wholesome food.  It’s also a comforting part of life, a way to bring everyone close together.  Growing up, I’ve seen my grandmother, mother, aunts and even my father cook traditional Italian recipes, at times spiced up with their own different flare, with so much gusto and pride.  It made cooking—and of course, eating!—a much more interesting affair, one that left a mark in our souls, a sweet story to...

Teachers and Students Connecting Through Nature

Every day I am a runner in a maze as if I were Zelda from the first Nintendo system. One day I teach, and they learn meanings of words like "scruples" and facts about the real Dracula. The next day I am shadowing a student who at any moment could disappear into the woods, or I am intervening in a verbal battle between a bully and his or her prey. "Enough with the side conversations. Get off the table, please. Focus on your work. Stop cursing." These are a few of my favorite daily declarations. But then there might be a Wednesday or Thursday when I get to play Scrabble with my struggling readers. There may be a Friday when I can get the...

Mind Key the Novel: A Review

After the disappointments of a sour break up and the troublesome relationship with her abusive father, Noelle heads to the Jersey Shore.  It’s supposed to be another brief vacation with her mother, dull and numb after the Noelle Ricci as drawn by Michelle Farencirecent heartaches.  Still, the rumbling waves of the Atlantic shore make Noelle feel at home, as if she’s belonged there all of her life.  But it’s not just the salty breeze and the soft wet sand under her feet that draw her in.  Arden, a boy vacationing a few apartments away, captures her attention and before she knows it— her heart.  The two spend only a couple of days together but somehow she feels as if she’s known him for years.  It...

How fiction changes everything

There’s something special in the way fiction opens the brain to draw its own conclusions and make new connections, while nonfiction—although certainly having its place—presents facts but rarely offers the opportunity for expansive thinking as fiction can. That’s not to underestimate the importance of nonfiction.  Facts are useful, but facts change.  And facts aren’t always… well, fact, are they? Opinion can be debated but cannot be proven… facts are hard information that can be proven or disproven.  In other words, facts can be false.  When fiction resonates, however, it catches us some place deep within our hearts and psyche… that place where we know truth, not as a fact, but as a place of understanding and peace.  Because fiction does not claim to be anything other...

In a Nutshell: Past Lives, Parallel Lives, and Future Lives

The idea of past, parallel and future lives almost seems ridiculous to a metaphysical heart surgeon who believes in the power of the present.  However, who we are and who we are to become is affected greatly by how we view the broad spectrum of our life (or lives).“Our bodies live this current lifetime and label it the present, but the continuum of our entire existence isn’t limited to the restraint of time,” Tamara Rokicki says in The connection of parallel lives.  “The past is what we see when we look as far back to the day we were born.  Our future is the years we have yet to live until we reach the end of our journey. But is there more?”In Past life regressions...

about “The Golden Skillet” by Tara Ann Lesko

AboutThe Golden Skilletby Tara Ann Lesko  Discover "The Golden Skillet" a memoir about self-discovery and spirituality as told through one woman's evolving relationship with food.A few years ago I decided to begin a memoir that would be funny as well as dramatic. I knew I had a story to tell, and once the dissolution of my seven-year marriage began in the Fall of 2012, I knew it would only get better. But I needed an angle that would make people care about my story. I chose one thing that molds and defines all of our experiences, the good and the bad, and that is food.Collage for chapter entitled "Namaste" by Tara Ann LeskoThe tentative title of my memoir is "The Golden Skillet," and it will...

Faeries and humans together

Are the faeries here to help us?  The opinion differs depending on the person.“I don't think [the fae] are here to help us, although they sometimes can be helpful to have around,” faerie artist Soso Erlenkamp said.  “All in all they are not very philanthropic and why should they be? Humans have not been very kind to them for a long time.”  The fae tell Soso that the magic is disappearing from the world and they want us to recognize and understand this.  It’s not only the magic that the fae themselves possess, Soso said, but also the magic that keeps our world turning.  Perhaps it is this reason, above all, that faeries have made their way back into our minds and our hearts, despite being...

Advice for seeing faeries

photo by Kely Luzio-CardonaPeople often ask how I see faeries.Like most things, seeing faeries (at least for me) is a good measure of faith and imagination. The imagination being the place where creative beings such as the faeries who paint the sunset or drop dew on the flowers live.  Faith is believing your gut when it tries to convince the heart that these stories—this imagination—is something more than flight of fancy. There are always signs when the faeries talk. Some people get the chills, some hear the voice in their head change in pitch or timbre.  Sometimes the signs are more subtle—diary entries that mimic subsequent events, or dreams that come true.  Sometimes the sign is as simple as a song on the radio at just...

Autumn Lights Festival – for healing and growth

I am excited to be a part of this year's Autumn Light's Festival in West Milford, taking place from 10am to 5 pm on October 11th.  Beginning at the intersection of Union Valley and Macopin Roads, and running along the street for about a mile, this festival has a ton of activities and vendors the whole family will love. Mind Key will be there with card readings, spiritual healings, and art from Grace NgDung and Danielle Rose inspired by faerie and spirit, as well as activities and crafts for the kids.We will not be the only booth for healing there, however.  Please check out the following to learn more about our friends in the realm of health and self-development.http://www.northjersey.com/community-news/finding-health-wellness-at-the-festival-1.1100386?page=allInformation on parking and traffic detours:http://www.northjersey.com/community-news/parking-road-closures-1.1100365...

Basking in the afterglow of Summer Fest

This weekend was beautiful!  Jacqui Geary of Trinity Metaphysical did a fantastic job organizing and running Trinity Summer Fest, all while running her own booth and doing readings too (thanks Jacqui!).I showcased my wings and meditation/dream pillows, and taught about the faeries while giving readings.  Couldn’t believe there was a three hour wait for readings with the faeries on Sunday!  Other readers had similar waits that day as well - a fabulous turnout. It was a busy weekend and I feel extremely blessed to have met so many wonderful people interested in hearing the faeries.  Many were also blessed with the fae as guides, and I could see them buzzing about and tittering in my ear.  They were always excited when they had pertinent advice to...

Blind Men Driving?

Blind Men Driving? When two guys, jamming together a couple times a week met a third guy, they decided they might as well start a band.  Perhaps because of their humble beginnings they considered themselves the blind leading the blind, hence the name “Blind Men Driving?”They may be driving blind but that hasn’t stopped them from playing their original tunes across Pennsylvania and New Jersey at benefit shows such as Trinity Summer Fest this weekend. This past April they put together a benefit for the Ecumenical Food Pantry of Pike County and also played at the Willco Fire Bay benefit in June.  September brings an event for diabetes, and of course this weekend’s Trinity Summer Fest is benefiting the Willco Fire Bay renters and the Branchville, NJ fire department.“They're...

“Retrash” – Finding beauty in lost things

Today’s guest blogger, Nathan Devine has pulled together the work of 82 designers that create beauty from trash in his book “Retrash.”  Learn more at www.retrash.com and facebook.com/retrash**********************************************************************“Retrash” is a book all about trash.I remember going to the dump when I was a kid and being excited by what treasure I might find, and at the same time feeling saddened and confused by the amount of trash that was being thrown away. I feel the same way today as an adult as I did back then, and I want to do something to change all of this.I’ve spent the last three years compiling the work of 82 designers and artists from 20 countries around the world to show the beautiful and innovative things that can...

The magic of spring today

Merry Beltane!Today is May Day, or Beltane as some call it… an ancient festival celebrating the turn of seasons, life, warmth and fertility.  Whether you honor the ancient celebrations or not, it’s hard to deny the magic in the air come May.  Halfway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, Beltane represents things that are bursting into growth - the tiny seedlings are pushing out leaves, drinking in water and nutrients, and getting ready to flower.  Animals of all kinds are mating, the frogs’ chorus filling the evening air with their song, birds busily building nests, and insects filling their air with their humming buzz.  What new signs of spring are cropping up by you? Here on my mountain the dandelions are showing their furry...

Core Groups

A term that’s been floating through my mind lately is “core.”Whether an apple core, the body’s core, or the core of the earth, “core” is defined as “the central, innermost, or most essential part of anything.”There’s also “corps,” or “a group of persons associated or acting together: the diplomatic corps; the press corps.”Although pronounced the same way, the two terms are rarely connected.  However, they are undoubtedly part of each other.  For example, the etymology of both words seem to indicate that they derived from the Latin word for body, “corpus.”  From there both terms made their way into Old French and Middle English before they arrived at their current definitions.I find this interesting and significant because a core of people can create the backbone...

Where is our power? In the end result, or the journey?

My friend, Tara Lesko, works in a Northern New Jersey school that focuses on alternative learning methods (my own words).  The followings was written in response to goal versus process oriented methods of teaching and learning. On a personal note, I’ve found that being too focused on the end goal has the distasteful result of disappointment when in fact much has been gained.  I think about my career changes, failed businesses, and other endeavors that never came to fruition.  Even my graduate degree is considered a failure by some because I’m not currently using it to make money.  However, if I discount these life events as failures because they did not manifest as expected (which brings me to another topic - whose expectation did they fail...

Why Mind Key?

I began the Mind Key endeavor because on my path of self-discovery I lost my way.  Haven’t we all at some point?  I let bad relationships and bad situations break me down.  I let old programming rule my life when I should have broken the records long ago.  I used to hear the faeries clearly, but once I lost that connection it took time for me to hear them again.  Only once I realized how broken I truly was could healing begin.  I went the regular MD route.  Which is a wonderful and necessary option - except when it doesn’t help.  I began seeing naturopathic doctor, Doni Wilson, and she taught me more than I could hope to understand about my body. I began taking...

What is “Mind Key”?

Once simply a novel, Mind Key has blossomed into The Mind Key Project - a hub of knowledge and resources, a community of practitioners, and a calendar of events aligned with bringing people together with their goals and dreams. Why “Mind Key”?  The term was chosen because we each have the potential within to create the life we want.  There’s no healing, no reality, no dream that is beyond our reach… but finding the resources to bring these things to fruition can be difficult.  Especially in a world full of “nos,” “can’ts” and “impossible.”It is my belief that nothing is impossible, if only space is created for it.  That space begins within our own bodies, our minds and our hearts.  “Mind Key,” the Novel is a...
