How to earn money pursuing your passion

By Tamara Rokicki The traditional nine-to-five job is no longer the only way to earn money.  We live in a time when traditional living is becoming less applicable. Today, having a sustainable job means making a living doing what you love.  People everywhere are discovering that living a full and satisfying life includes doing things that make them happy—hobbies and passions that make them feel alive and well rounded. Many bloggers, Etsy shop owners, and YouTubers own their passions by creating their own little business empire. The Mind Key Project was founded on the belief that everyone is not only entitled to financial freedom through the pursuit of his or her dreams. We also believe that by denying our talents, passions and dreams, we sell ourselves short...

Yin and Yang: A Christian Point of View

The concept of Yin and Yang sprouted its roots in China several hundred years before Christ’s birth. It represented Taoism, a religion that focuses on two opposing parts, one dark one light, one evil one good, one balanced one unbalanced.  But the true beauty of it is that when placed together, the duality of this symbol recognizes the true balance of life itself.  It takes these two clashing parts to make a whole, something well rounded and spiritually progressive.  I can relate my Christian faith to this concept, as it is the very basic foundation of my spiritual core.  If Yin and Yang represent two equal yet opposing forces, then I find a congruent principle in my own spiritual journey. My faith understands the acceptance of...

Thriving in a Blended Family

There are different kinds of family units.  Single parent, the Traditional family, and now the Blended family, a recurring situation where couples merge and raise a family where biological and un-biological children come together.  Writer and Mind Key member Tamara Rokicki, shares her blended family journey through her personal blog. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Blended Family: ‘a family consisting of a couple and their children from this and all previous relationships’. I often get asked how I manage to survive—and thrive—in a blended environment. Many people expect this arrangement to be frustrating, something that either works or completely falls apart. I’ve met parents who automatically assumed there is a ‘resentment’ component among our children—biological, adopted, or step. The latest question has been, “Is it hard to be in a blended family...

Aromatherapy and Essential Oils 101

As I focus on my meditation practice and always look for new tools to engage in a deeper, more spiritual awareness, I find aromatherapy to be an essential instrument to my practice and overall daily living.  But with so many brands, schools of thought, and opinions, how do we discern the true meaning and benefits of aromatherapy?  Being new to aromatherapy, I’ve reached out to our Mind Key member Danielle Rose, whose expertise in aromatherapy and essential oils provides valuable information. The first question I asked her, and possibly the most important question when learning about essential oils, is what are they exactly?  Additionally, how do you know we’re buying pure and authentic products? Danielle explains that essential oils are derived through distillation of plant material--usually the...

NaNoWriMo 2015: What You Need to Know

For writers, this is the highly anticipated month of the year.  We bite our fingernails to stubs, elusively try to rearrange our schedules, and promise—no, threaten—ourselves to be as productive as possible. It’s NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month, and it’s the most wonderful time of the year.  Okay, maybe Christmas is, but November holds a very special value for those who yearn to write a novel or simply tackle a writing project.Sounds crazy?  It is… a bit.  The truth is if we silence our inner critic, if we truly sit down and ignore the grammatical mistakes, editing faux-pas, and everything telling us that our writing isn’t turning out right, then the 50,000 word mark is actually achievable.  Read author Marissa Meyer’s guest blog to find out...

The Inconspicuous Dream

'Tangled Branches'- Kely Luzio-CardonaEver since the inception of civilization dreaming has fascinated humanity.  From Joseph interpreting the King of Egypt’s dreams to modern psychological research, dreaming has always exposed a captivating and mysterious aspect of our minds.Throughout the years, as most people, I’ve had my share of colorful dreams; in particular one that has occurred since I was a little girl.  It is an incomprehensible dream, one that focuses more on sounds and feelings rather than the visual aspect of what happens in it.  The emotions tied to this recurring dream have left me drained, confused and really unsettled.  In my waking hours, I’ve tried to analyze exactly what the dream means or better yet, what message it tries to send me.  The fact that...

Celtic Art Contest

Things are always moving forward here at Mind Key.  We are please to announce the next official contest, always in an effort to look for talented individuals to enrich our community and inspire the world.  When I brainstormed for ideas on what the contest theme should be, it came to me pretty easily.  Being drawn to anything Celtic I realized that during my research I’ve come across so many people, websites, and entire communities just as enamored with the Celtic culture as I am.  For this reason, Mind Key is seeking talented artists of any genre to submit their best representation of any Celtic art.For information about this contest and to access our form submission click here.  Most importantly, don’t forget to share our contest...

Sacred Smoke Bowl Blessing: A Native American Ritual

Among the many world cultures, I find Native American history to be the richest and most profound of all.  Deeply rooted in the great land that makes up the United States, their culture and practices are the foundation of our American civilization.  Much is credited to Native American history and traditions.  Many of their practices we still use today (think moccasins, teepees or dream catchers) but others are unfamiliar and worth exploring. Continuously aware of the spirit world and connected to the purity, symbolism and value of each nature element, Native Americans believed in the worth of life—most importantly the manner in which one conducts his life. As an immigrant who has grown up with a varied cultural background, I find the Native American culture...

Why Mind Key Is My Second Home – Tamara Rokicki

When you’re a writer, it’s very difficult to find that homey, comfortable feeling.  The world, as we see it, is this monotonous and rule-enforced place in which we spend a timeline called life.  It’s beautiful and enjoyable, don’t get me wrong, but when you have a story to tell, the real world just doesn’t cut it.  There are words to be found, immortalized, and written to craft stories that have yet to be told.  It’s both a heavy and exhilarating burden because the struggle to produce such stories, and then share them with the world, requires a huge leap into the unknown—and it requires faith.  The Leap of FaithAmong the vulnerability, chaos and uncertainty of putting yourself out there, as a writer you need to...

Excerpt from “Blood Ties, Book One of From Broken Wings Series”

Excerpt from From Broken Wings a novel by Tamara Rokicki. No one could figure out what had happened to Kyna—the young girl—but from the wounds on her neck they decided it was the attack of a rabid wolf that had entered the cottage through an open window.  Many believed this theory, although some found the incident odd and unsettling. If only they knew, Antha thought. Kyna’s father had blamed himself for forgetting the window open, his sunken face unable to speak or eat since the death of his daughter.  A knot formed in Antha’s throat and more than anything she wanted let him know he wasn’t to blame.  But she couldn’t. If she revealed the truth, her sister Áine would be burned at the stake.  ...

When Passion and Creativity Meet: Crystal’s Unique Cakes

Baking can be such a creative outlet.  The cool thing about the entire process is the memories one makes while making a one of a kind sweet.  My friend Crystal is one of those people who does it all; home schools her kids, spends great quality time with family, works out like a rock star and bakes her little heart out!  When I thought about this week’s theme, Cooking as a Creative Endeavor, I immediately thought of her baking creations.   What makes her baked goods so unique is that I can totally see a little part of her in every creation.  We all know someone in our life whose qualities and attributes seem to reflect them in whatever they do.  That’s Crystal and her special...

The Teacher I’ll Never Forget

Mrs. Brischetto’s breath reeked of coffee and cigarettes.  Her face was inches away from mine, infuriated eyes glaring behind huge glasses.  Frustration settled in every wrinkle on her face and her arms flailed in the air.  My second grade classmates gathered around my desk watching me shrink smaller and smaller into my chair.  My math book sat opened on my desk and I stared at it blankly.  The unfriendly shapes and words started to blur together, creating a soup of ink on the page.  I don’t remember what my teacher screamed but her words were slicing me to pieces.  They belittled me, taunting me on my inability to figure out the math problem.  She had explained it to me over and over.  I just didn’t...

Mind Key the Novel: A Review

After the disappointments of a sour break up and the troublesome relationship with her abusive father, Noelle heads to the Jersey Shore.  It’s supposed to be another brief vacation with her mother, dull and numb after the Noelle Ricci as drawn by Michelle Farencirecent heartaches.  Still, the rumbling waves of the Atlantic shore make Noelle feel at home, as if she’s belonged there all of her life.  But it’s not just the salty breeze and the soft wet sand under her feet that draw her in.  Arden, a boy vacationing a few apartments away, captures her attention and before she knows it— her heart.  The two spend only a couple of days together but somehow she feels as if she’s known him for years.  It...

The Connection of Parallel Lives

I’ve never been sold on the whole ‘you live, you die, and that is it!’ idea.  As a very young child I’ve felt a connection to some higher force, a spiritual being who watched over me and had a plan for my life.  At that age I didn’t know what it was or what it meant, and it took several years of self discovery and spiritual journeys to finally realize where my beliefs stood.  I’ve met countless people that cover both ends of the spectrum; from adamant atheists to deeply devoted Christians.  I’ve also met Hindus and Muslims, New Age spiritualists, Pagans, and others who simply didn’t wish to be labeled but walk on their own spiritual path.  We may be different from each other,...

The Real Emancipated Woman

“But Mom, you don’t work,” is what I heard from the backseat. It was the answer given to the recap of my day as a reason for my exhaustion.  I had done five loads of laundry, picked up the dry cleaning, cleaned up the home and planned dinner.  We were heading home, where I’d spend the next few hours cloning myself to help with homework, start supper, walk the dogs and put those loads of clothes away.“Dad has a job and you don’t,” she continued innocently.  I was stunned.  I thought about those words for a long moment.  You don’t work.  Is that how the children really view me? I thought.  As a jobless mother who sits at home watching TV, painting my fingernails and occasionally...

In a Nutshell: Faeries- Our Magical and Spiritual Companions

There’s something magical around us and we experience it every time we observe a sunset or walk through an open field carpeted with dew-kissed grass. This week, writer Danielle Rose beautifully brings to light the mystery of that magic:  Faeries.  As May 1st approaches, Danielle finds it appropriate to talk about Beltane, or May Day, one of the photography by Kely Luzio-Cardonafaeries primary holidays.  In Faeries for Beltane she explains what the term Faerie means by re-introducing two previously published articles.   She explains, “[Faeries] embody the magic behind the science of things. They are the reason the flowers bloom, the snow glistens, and the waves crash upon the sand. ”    Danielle also includes another fresh take on faeries. Artist and tattooist Scarlet Sinclair says, “To me ‘faerie’...

Nature Connectedness

Photo by Helminadia RandfordThe history of humankind is impossible to understand, or even validate, without acknowledging the evolution of man in the natural settings.  Since the beginning of time our ancestors relied on nature to provide them with physical sustainability, spiritual awareness and a holistic connection. The direct connection which humans and nature have shared for centuries can’t be ignored, but should help us reevaluate the benefits of it while living in a world so embedded in technology. The modern world has been enriched by the technological advancement of global connectivity, managing to connect billions of people around the world with the simple click of a button.  This process, which enables us to view a virtual tour of the Grand Canyon while chatting on Skype...
